Sold Cobham, April 27, 2001
Reviewer: ecewing (richmond) - See all my reviews
If you didn't catch Billy, Brecker Bro. and company live during the 70's, this is a must have. After a few earlier releases and prior tours the group peaks during this tour. The group is seasoned and tight everyone gets a chance to solo, more then just the standard bars. Billy also lays down a sweet run of his own, pure Billy Cobham. My favorite *****

Excellent Performance, February 14, 2001
Reviewer: Glenn Verde (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This is an excellent live album in the jazz-fusion days of the 70's. Billy is at his best with his incredible, furious, drumming ability. Benny Maupin is also great on sax. The horn section is truly fabulous and tight. There is alot of soloing, and each track is very upbeat and moving. I have the "Total Eclipse" CD, and this is just as good! A must have for jazz-fusion fans.

Cobham's first album as a leader, in 1973--a jazz-rock classic. As on his slightly earlier outings with Mahavishnu Orchestra, Cobham dazzles with rapid-fire pyrotechnics. But, listening carefully, he also does his job of rhythmic support--for this, he calls on his roots in drum-corps and Latin timbale drumming. His compositions here set fire to a stunningly tight band. The scowling, scurrying, skirmishing performance by the late rock-guitar ace, Tommy Bolin, is particularly memorable. He merges beautifully with Cobham's Mahavishnu bandmate, Jan Hammer (Moog/keyboards), who eggs Bolin on with warp-speed synthesized guitar sounds. The band was just as involved rhythmically as McLaughlin's, but had a gritty rapid-transit flavor where Mahavishnu was in spiritual quest. --Peter Monaghan

A word to guitarists:, June 2, 2003
Reviewer: lzr (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This cd is groundbreaking in an aspect that hasn't yet been referred to: the union of the more frantic 'Mahavishnu' type soloing ,(McLaughlin, DiMeola) with a more relaxed, blues inflected style,(Clapton,Allman), from Bolin. Up until this moment the two soloing styles had been at odds with each other; the fusion guys thinking the blues-rock guys weren't ambitious enough, the blues guys thinking the fusion guys weren't soulful enough. Bolin was the man for the job of unifying the styles, combining a relaxed bluesy vibrato with chops to spare; still the hallmark of the best modern soloists.

One of the groundbreaking "Jazz Fusion/Funk" recordings, July 5, 2002
Reviewer: Todd Ebert (Long Beach California) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Almost 30 years after "Spectrum" was recorded, there still seems to be a youthful interest in "funk jazz" and "fusion"; especially now that digital sampling has exploded into the music
world and e-musicans are trying to create music that is both dancible and sonically interesting. Moreover, "Spectrum" almost serves as a "how to manual" for making tasteful music from these genres. It features some very good musicians in Cobham, Jan Hammer, Tommy Bolin, Joe Farrell, Ron Carter, and others. I highly recommend it along with Jeff Beck's "Blow by Blow". Admittedly I rarely listen to either much anymore, but that tends to happen after a few hundred listens.

Exquisite, September 12, 2005
Reviewer: Hector Reyes-erazo - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"Crosswinds" has been in my vinyl collection since 1974, when I first picked up a copy at King Karol Records on 42nd Street in Manhattan. Well, I recently became reacquainted with this recording after picking up a CD copy at a "oh so trendy" record store in Haight-Ashburry, San Francisco. As I did then, I played the new CD over and over again, completely enraptured by Cobham's "Ripley's Believe or Not" staccatto drumming and Lee Pastora's smoking Latin percussion. Joined by the Brecker Brothers, George Duke, John Abercrombie, Alex Blake, John Williams, Garnett Brown and other great luminaries of early jazz fusion, Cobham and his willing partners beat and shape a veritable masterpiece. Drive along Big Sur and take in the vast and dramatic California skies and scarred bluffs and you'll begin to undertand what hues of emotions this exquisite recording conjures. Crosswinds alternates between adrenaline musical rushes and absolute sublime chill, creating a perfectly balanced sinuous stream of sound. Simply exquisite!

Fusion was maturing, February 9, 2003
Reviewer: D. M. Paine "Renaissance Man" (Alexandria, Virginia USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Billy Cobham made this album at a pivotal point. The original Mahavishnu Orchestra had disbanded, John McLaughlin was wallowing, and jazz purists were beginning to complain about the rock influence. Billy helped show a new direction. Crosswinds opening suite has lush and sophisticated horn arrangments, soothing a subtly intense rhythm. The effect is like night, tropical breezes, just as he wants to convey. You can almost hear the ocean, the music of the wild Caribbean (no steel drums of course, just cool). The rest of the album alternates between hot and cool, with some funky fusion and a beautiful extended piece, Heathers, near the end, featuring a trombone solo that sounds like the soundtrack to a loving and relaxing dream. The album is inspired, Billy at his creative best, showing the jazz world a new dimension that fusion had not shown before. At 35 minutes it is a little short, but we have quality here, not quantity. This album belongs in any jazz or fusion collection.
