Really this book should be called "Roger the Grumpy Penguin" because, even though Lily is an obvious and likable hero, the story is all about Roger's journey. His little frowny face is so compelling! Here are a few things about Roger: His favorite book is empty. His favorite store is closed. His favorite sport is resting. And (my personal favorite) his favorite hobby is organizing blank paper. Roger reminds me of [b:Scaredy Squirrel|562763|Scaredy Squirrel (Scaredy Squirrel)|Mélanie Watt|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1349042012s/562763.jpg|549907], of course, and this book will appeal to fans of the multi-phobic rodent. Many of the pages are full of little drawings showing all the things Lily loves and all the things Roger doesn't.

I really liked this, but the ending was a bit abrupt as Roger is easily won over by Lily (she does give him an ice cream cone, which I guess could easily win me over, too). I was very happy to see his frowny face turn into a smile.

Too much detail for sharing at library story time, but a fun pick for ages 3-6.

With entertaining, vibrant pictures and simple word phrases, this is a whimsical book about being thankful for many things. It could be a read-aloud for preschoolers or a read-with-assistance for K-1st-2nd.

This book is a very fun read. It uses colorful illustrations with examples to demonstrate the idea that dreaming is important. When showing fun and imaginative dreams, the illustrations are colorful and whimsical, but when showing people who have lost "all possibility of thinking super things," the illustrations are minimal and comparatively less colorful. When showing the dreams of those who only wish to own things, the illustrations are just whatever that item is, covering the entire page, demonstrating how limiting and redundant those wishes are. The message is very motivating: to keep dreaming no matter what, even for those who have stopped, because dreams are important and can change the world.
This is a great message for children and would definitely come across as motivation to think up some new and different ideas.
