This nonfiction work on Arkansas during the American Civil War breaks down the conflict year by year with sections written by different expert contributors. It's not creative nonfiction, but neither is it totally dry and boring; instead, it strikes a nice middle ground and is helped by the fact that the major content is about 172 pages. The text is often accompanied by photography and basic maps of battlefield actions and regions.

Fascinating reading. Each chapter is actually written by a different author, each of whom also participated in a seminar at The Old State House entitled "I Have Seen Enough Myself...: The Battle of Poison Spring Seminar" which came about in part because of a letter found with a collection of Spence family letters acquired by the museum in 1998.The book details several Civil War battles in Arkansas late in the conflict, esp. those occurring during what was termed the "Camden Expedition". The letter, obviously written by a Confederate soldier, details how black soldiers were put in front of the lines to take most of the casualties by the North and also how they were killed out of hand if wounded by the South who were determined "not to take negroe prisoners".
The book explores race relations in America, and primarily in the South during the Antebellum years and the Civil War period. I think everyone could learn from this thought provoking collection of essays and I thank Mark Christ for putting it together.

The Old State House Museum, Little Rock, Arkansas acquired a collection of letters that fit together and were put on exhibit. One letter was left out of the exhibit that described the killing and mutilation of wounded, surrendered black Union troops at a Civil War battle in Arkansas. This book is the proceedings of a one day seminar held about the letter and the battle.
