ABOUT THE BOOK: As the world’s second-largest economy, China is extending its influence across the globe with the complicity of democratic nations. MY THOUGHTS: I didn't find any totally new information in this book. I've heard about the struggles of the Uighurs, for example, and of the ways China exerts influence on Canadians of Chinese origin. What was new was the depth and breadth of these types of actions, and that was highly troubling.

I am not yet convinced, though, that we will see China emerge dominant in a new world order. First, the debt on their Belt and Road initiative will surely be an economic anchor, especially since Chinese financial markets aren't open; they aren't attractive to foreign investors. Second, China's population is aging. Demographics suggest that India will emerge as a stronger power than China.

The book left me thinking about Canada's role in all of this. This country has been ambiguous about issues such as the independence of Taiwan and other issues. We may be forced to take a stronger position. Global warming increases the economic importance of the Arctic region, so Canada may face a direct challenge from China there. It may be time that our position regarding China reflect more of Canada's interests than of Canada's values. But where is the right balance? I don't know and I suspect finding it would require constant vigilance and adjustment.

This is an awareness raising book. The author's familiarity with China is evident. A good, and important, read.… (altro)

Eerste opmerking: Lees dit boek in de oorspronkelijke taal want de Nederlandse vertaling is onbetrouwbaar. De vertaalster denkt de vertaling van dit boek te mogen misbruiken om aan Woke activisme te doen. Totaal onaanvaardbaar en als een vertaling op deze manier wordt aangepast aan de overtuiging van de vertaalster dan moet je zeker ook de vraag stellen wat er nog allemaal bij de vertaling werd gewijzigd.

Respect voor de Nederlandse taal is het minste wat we van een vertaling mogen verwachten. Nederlands is geen letterlijke vertaling van het Engels. Witte mensen is een anglicisme. Het is al erg genoeg dat Vlamingen denken dat Nederlands letterlijk vertaald Frans is. Als we nu ook nog letterlijk uit het Engels denken te moeten vertalen dan is het hek van de dam.

Het boek is verder zeer terecht een aanklacht tegen de CCP-dictatuur. In een drietal hoofdstukken bespreekt Joanna Chiu een achttal landen en hun relatie met de CCP. Zij voerde gebruikmakend van haar kennis van het mandarijn -zij is zelf Kantonneessprekend wat heel wat anders is-meerdere gespreken over de hele wereld.

Het blijft echter journalistiek door een persoon met slechts een bachelor opleiding. Dat is te merken in de bespreking van de thema's van de hoofdstukken in dit boek die per land zijn ingedeeld. Dikwijls wijkt de journaliste volledig af van wat oorspronkelijk de bedoeling was nl. de bespreking van een bepaald land.

Nietemin komen een aantal dingen aan bod die zeker meer aandacht moeten krijgen zoals de intimidatie in binnen en buitenland van mensen die kritiek durven te uiten op de CCP.

Zeker de moeite waard om te lezen, maar dan liefst in de oorspronkelijke taal.… (altro)
