The Encyclopaedia Britannica Twelfth Edition
The best reference in the world. Proper, scholarly articles by experts in their chosen field, lots of fantastic pull out maps etc. Even though it's nearly 100 years old, we still use it a key reference for many things. A glorious gift to me when I was 16 by a next door neighbour teacher. The first thing I'd rescue in a fire.
