Includes a large enough selection of Chikamatsu's work to show it is not all typified by the tragic sewamono; there is one jidaimono, Coxinga, and a sewamonmo with a rather improable happy ending, The Uprooted Pine, as well as the better-known domestic tragedies like the Suicides at Sonozaki and the Courier for Hell.
