I was surprised by the excellence of this book. I wasn't expecting very much since I've previously read only mistitled books about early indian "science", but this one was actually right on point. The author argues that indian medical science contained the seeds of rational scientific inquiry at a very early date and traces its interaction with materialistic currents in contemporary Indian philosophy. Then he discusses how the religious ideology of a hierarchical society effectively stifled the development of scientific thought in India.… (altro)

This is a badly written book. The ostensible purpose is to discuss what different forms of science, i.e. those of primitive society (hence anthropology in the title) and those of past societies (hence historiography), have in common. But although the author claims to be writing about this topic, in actuality he hardly even touches it. Instead he jumps aimlessly from one famous philosopher to another, citing them all but producing only an incoherent presentation of disparate ideas as he goes along. I really could not understand at all what he was trying to say in this confusing book.… (altro)
