Martin Chanock

One of those classics of anthropology that should be read, especially for anyone interested in the problem of "customary law." It is a bit repetitive at points, and only the more serious scholars will want to wade through the middle portions where Chanock provides the evidence for his argument. But those wishing only to know the argument and the implications can read the beginning and the final discussion pages.
