Oliver is a young otter who lives in the ocean with his mother and a group of otters. One day, an oil tanker gets damaged, spilling gallons and gallons of oil into the ocean. The oil killed many fish and coated the otter’s fur. The oil got into the shellfish, which is what the otters eat to survive. The otters got weaker and weaker until they were rescued by a wildlife center. Oliver is able to be rehabilitated and released back into the ocean, but his mother passed away at the wildlife center. Oliver uses his mother’s teachings to take care of himself in the ocean.
I absolutely loved this book! Oil spills are very detrimental to animals, and I do not think most students really understand oil spills. I love that the illustrations were also done by the child author because I feel like students who are reading the book can relate to the drawings. I admire this author so much for tackling such an important topic, and I definitely want to have this book in my future classroom!

This is a story about a sea otter named Oliver and his mother. They were going about their daily lives then one day they find themselves in thick black yuck! They are covered in it and cannot find food. Will they be able to survive?

This book gives facts about an oil spill that once happened in 1989 and what they did to help clean up the mess.

This is the story of how one otter is rescued from the Exxon Valdez oil spill. He is taken to a rehabilitation center and eventually released into the wild- without his mother who dies under anesthesia. This story is written by a nine-year-old girl.
