Charles Davenport Champlin was born in Bath, New York on March 23, 1926. During World War II, he joined the Army and saw combat in Germany, where he was injured by a German mortar shell. He received a degree in English from Harvard University in 1948. He worked for Life magazine and for Time mostra altro magazine before becoming the entertainment editor of The Los Angeles Times in 1965. He was the lead movie critic for The Los Angeles Times from 1967 until 1980 and reviewed books thereafter. He also wrote a column entitled Critic at Large. He wrote several books during his lifetime including Back There Where the Past Was: A Small-Town Boyhood, Hollywood's Revolutionary Decade: Charles Champlin Reviews the Movies of the 1970s, A Life in Writing: The Story of an American Journalist, and My Friend, You Are Legally Blind: A Writer Struggles with Macular Degeneration. Back There Where the Past Was: A Small-Town Boyhood… di Charles Champlin
Probably the best book I've read in 2013.
The surprise here is how many other movie productions George Lucas was involved in, as an executive producer, apart from his mainstay movies like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. This guy has been an indie filmmaker his whole life and the rest of us have hardly noticed. I love this quote from Lucas regarding a barely-remembered small film in 1986 titled "Latino":
"On the one hand I'm doing these huge productions and at the same time I'm helping on these little productions, for my friends. They're all interesting movies, movies that I cared about and wanted to see made one way or another. Some of them were small failures, some of them were huge failures and some were extremely nice movies. But in most of the interviews with me, and even within the company, they're passed right over, as though they never existed. But those movies may be closer to what I am than Star Wars."… (altro)
