This book is about a girl, Lety, who is an ESL learner, and volunteers at an animal shelter where she writes stories about the animals. She meets friends and goes on a journey to get back a friend's pet. The book is a great read for the classroom because it gets students excited about what they can do with their hobbies and with what they are learning about English within the classroom.

Oooh, nice art mystery adventure. Set in Mexico, with a collection of 7th graders/ 12 years olds trying to find Frida Kahlo's stolen peacock ring. Moves right along, has a good smattering of Spanish and Kahlo history throughout, and several twisty turns before the truth comes out. Own voices, fiesty young heroine.

Great characters, animal tie-in, hard issues dealt with on an 11 year old level -- Gaby's mom has been deported to Honduras, and she's living with the father she doesn't really know. Fortunately, she has a loving community, including neighbors who want her to live with them, a vibrant school, and bratty neighborhood boys. Gaby has a real gift for letting the world know about animals who need their help, and even when she mis-steps, she finds her way through.… (altro)

I think that this is a perfectly solid example of middle grade improving literature -- heartwarming, learns a life lesson, becomes a better friend and person sort of thing. I found it to be a quick read, with lovely community, interesting characters, and a good message. However, Allie is very hard to like. That is the point, but it doesn't make the book more fun to read. That said, I'm not the intended audience, and I believe that 5th graders everywhere will find something to identify with.
