While it's never pleasant to read of the misfortune's of others, this book is nevertheless an effective antidote to the "Good Old Days" syndrome. The entries make clear that suffering has been a large part of the American Story from the get-go, and more than a little of that suffering is a direct result of humans being human, i.e., greed, lust for power, underestimating Mother Nature and a list as long as my arm. Well written and a real eye-opener as to what our ancestors had to contend with.
