Novel Advice: Practical Wisdom for Your Favorite Literary Characters by Jay Bushman is a fun read that will make you smile and once or twice laugh.
I was a little disappointed in the book but I think that had more to do with what I was expecting. Once I discarded my initial expectations I enjoyed the book for what it was and not for what I thought it would be. Because it uses an advice column concept to discuss characters and plots, I expected something a bit more over the top. While I probably would have laughed more with that, I also think it would have gotten old quick, so I'm probably lucky I didn't get what I hoped for.
I'm going to sum up my overall view with how I think of each letter combo (character's letter then advice columnist response). The initial letter asking for advice is a character study from that character's own perspective of herself, so that is usually a quirky glimpse at the work from which the character comes. The response is almost like a character study that one might make of a character except in the form of an advice letter. Both letters generally have some humor in them but they also offer some good insight into the works involved. Sometimes it is what is left unsaid that is the funniest.
I would recommend this to most readers but especially those who enjoy thinking about how they would like to give advice to a character while reading a book.

This book was pretty interesting and fun! I loved the premise of our favorite literary characters writing into a advice columnist to get help on an issue or concern. There was snark, humor and some advice that will make you look at your favorite characters in a whole new way! This book is perfect for lovers of reading who want to take a deeper and interesting dive into the literary characters biggest issues/concerns.… (altro)
