Occidentalism: The West in the Eyes of Its Enemies di Ian Buruma
A nicely done primer that introduces the average reader to the origins of over two century's of anti western thought. Insightful views into the habits and state of mind that have driven some the Wests most implacable foes.
In 'Het Churchillcomplex’ tekent Ian Buruma een fascinerend beeld van de Anglo-Amerikaanse wereld in verval, en hoe een roemrijk verleden kan leiden tot de problemen van vandaag. In 1945 werd West-Europa bevrijd door de Engelsen en de Noord-Amerikanen. Groot Brittannië en Amerika waren toonbeelden van vrijheid, openheid en democratie. Na brexit en de verkiezing van Donald Trump is weinig meer over van dat beeld. Hoe is het zover gekomen? Waarom worden beide landen nu bestuurd door leiders die alles waar Churchill en Roosevelt voor hebben gestreden met voeten treden? Vanuit de onverwachte wending die de politiek van beide landen genomen heeft vraagt Buruma zich af of dit iets te maken heeft met de glorie van weleer. Hij gaat de relatie tussen de beide landen na, maar vooral ook de persoonlijke verhouding tussen de Britse premiers en de Amerikaanse presidenten, te beginnen bij Churchill en Roosevelt. This book is good but I think Keith Lowe's Savage Continent is a more compelling treatment of the subject.
If you like me seek insights into and understanding of other nations' fascination (or a lack of it) with Britain you probably took a wrong book. For it only researches feelings of a few representatives of different nations, whose views quite often are at odds with those of the general populace.
