Good, readable overview of the Spiritual Franciscans and their suppression by Pope John XXII. " John told them to obey; most did, and those who did not were burned at the stake. The first executions took place on May 7, 1318. Victims and inquisitor alike were Franciscans. It was very much a family affair." This books explains what happened
Magnificent account of the 12th and 13th century Spiritual Franciscans and Pope John XXII over the amount of property the Franciscan monastics were allowed to have and who were the "true" Christians. Great read, but you will need to have a decent background in Middle Age Church history to understand it well.
