5319. All things at Once, by Mika Brzezinski with Daniel Paisner (read 16 Oct 2015) While riding my stationary bike each morning I watch, for 30 minutes, Morning Joe. The author is co-host and since she is a Democrat I much prefer her comments to Joe's except when Joe criticizes Republicans--which he sometimes does. This book tells of Mika's life, including growing up in Washington while her father was National Security Director for President Carter--Mika played with Amy Carter at the White House at times. .Mika tells of her exciting times in TV news, including her reporting of the 2000 election debacle and her on the scene reporting on Sept 11. Concise, easy to read, yet informative essays dealing with the different aspects of healthy eating, body image, and solutions to make us a healthier people. The information was given in a personal way, making this just as much of a memoir of several people, as essays on issues. Good reading for women and teenage girls with food issues of their own or who want to learn more about the health of our nation.

Mika definitely comes off as obsessed in this book. She has an obsession to be and stay thin, and she has an obsession with helping America conquer obesity. As an overweight woman (or as Mika would say, fat) I came into reading this book thinking 'what would a skinny chick know about struggling with weight and eating?' From what she reveals in this book she has struggled with things that I am very familiar with (although I have to admit that I have never eaten a whole box of cereal in one sitting, nor have I ever contemplated it).

While I liked reading about Mika and Diane's stories, the parts of the book talking about the research Mika has done read more like a term paper than a book. Don't even get my started on the whole block quoting thing. It was completely unnecessary and distracting.

Overall I felt this book was good but Mika seemed a bit too preachy at times.

I hate to admit it, but I just could not listen to this one for very long. I find that if a person does not convey enough emotion in their voice or has a voice that annoys me in any way, then I just can’t keep listening to the audio book. Unfortunately, this was one of them.

One of my friends said that she found a ton of great information on these CDs though. So hopefully, you will find the value within it. I am thinking that I might try the actual book though. I really like the premise of it.… (altro)
