If there's High Church and Low Church for the graphics half of graphic novels, this book is the leaky shack of the First Antioch Free Will Baptist Church in BFE, Alabama. That's fine by me, I'm in this genre for the novel half, and I think I tend Low Church anyway.

The subject matter drew me in to reading this, as I enjoy reading about blossoming relationships going bad and sad, as one does. Melancholic Low Church then, sounds promising. But it's all really banal, there's little evidence of any insight into their personalities or relationship, and the breakup comes smack out of nowhere on about the last page. It's like the author had never heard of story arc.

Not really recommended.

Kids say unhinged things and I'm looking forward to what mine will eventually say (she clearly has opinions written in her furrowed brow and skeptical expressions).

With "observations", I wondered if there'd be commentary as well but nah, almost entirely a collection of occasionally profound nonsense Jeffrey's son Oscar says. This book is almost ten years old so I'm guessing he's a teenager now, or at least a tween? Wild to think about time progression.

Now remember my impressions are based on an ARC received in January 2016 and the book isn't due until August 2016. In fact about halfway thru the art gets very rough and big disclaimers of "ART NOT FILE" adorn every page.

I'm sincerely worried about Andy & Lucy o.o like don't trust the humans! They're never up to good things! Sneaky is sneaky!

In general I enjoyed this graphic novel. And I learned some stuff--that's right, you get to learn stuff. At the end Brown makes a point to say he is constantly reading new sources to keep it as up to date as possible, meanwhile two present day "scientists" jump in occasionally to set straight incorrect assumptions.

Like I said in a status update, this reminds me of the cartoon CRO, which is not bad and greatly appreciated.

I think kids (especially middle grade) will appreciate the fact that neither Lucy nor Andy are taken seriously by the "adults" (isn't this case their parents and two older kids, Phil and Margaret). It's the first in a series, and Lucy at least is usually proved correct, so I wonder how long we will follow them.

Or whether Andy will EVER get to go on a hunt or will Danny EVER wear pants.

Darth Vader wrangles his tiny tots, Luke and Leia, through the holiday season, complete with some allusions to Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" and lots of fun in the snow of Hoth.
