I am not at all into makeup, cosmetics, & only the most basic of skin care. When I was asked to review this book, I agreed because Mary Kay is a household name, but what did I know about the history of the company? I didn't even know that there was an actual Mary Kay, let alone anything else.

The story starts in the beginning, of course, with the author, Jackie Brown, meeting Mary Kay for the first time, and goes on from there. The book reminds me of a badly written soap opera (not that the book is badly written, that's not what I mean), with so many one-sided, narcassistic characters, drama on every other page, lies, deceit, twists & turns, people being sued & killing themselves, and did I mention the drama? I was absolutely horrified that people treated each other the way people did in this book. I've never bought Mary Kay cosmetics, and I sure as heck won't buy them now; even if half of the things are true, I wouldn't want to support that company.

If you are at all interested in cosmetics, how to successful run & grow a business, or interested in soap operas *smile* then add this book to your TBR pile!

In the 60's women had few choices. Mary Kay gave them more choice and oppurtunities they had never considered.

Selling cosmetics came easily for Jackie Brown. As one of the first sales people, she was able to rise quickly through the company, becoming a second tier director with many salespeople under her. Her income grew immensely, but there was trouble in the pink paradise that was Mary Kay land. It started with the secret spiking of a punchbowl, and ended in lies, danger, law suits and tragedy.

As a former Mary Kay lady (unsuccessful) I found this to be a fascinating and sad story. The lies we were told, we passed on to our customers, and recruits. It seems like they have cleaned up their act and are still hugely successful, but was the lying and cheating really necessary?

I recommend this book for anyone interested in "true (almost) crime". Who knew? I was simply stunned !

I received this book from Bostick Communications for review.

Little Cricket is about a Hmong family from Vietnam. In the family there is a 12 year old girl name Kia but her loving family call her "Little Cricket". One day the north Vietnamese soldiers came and destroyed the whole village and kidnap all the boys and kia's father so they can help them fight the Americans. This destroyed kia's peaceful family and forced them to leave their home and escape to Thailand. After this dangerous escape they settle in a refugee camp. After 3 long years a Minnesotan church agrees to sponsor Kia's family to immigrate to the U.S. But there was a paper work error causing Kia's mom and grandma to stay behind. Kia, Kia's brother Xigi and her grandfather flew to Minnesota where it is safer to live but it was a foreign country to them and they feel lonely. This is one of the most interesting book I have ever read because I l learnt that in 1970 there was a war between the American's and the north Vietnamese. The most exciting part of the book is when Kia's family had to swim across the river because they all don't know how to swim but after their cooperation effort they made it. I highly recommend this book to everyone the age of 9-13.… (altro)
