It's 1845 and Lady Cornbrook is visiting her Aunt Maude in Yorkshire when Maude's companion is Lizie McNab is found dead. Lady C starts to investigate.
I enjoyed the story, and like how these characters are developing. The writing style makes for an easy read.

Penny May decides she has had enough of her job and 'retires' to the Lincolnshire country. It doesn't take her long for her and her uncontrollable dog to find a body.
Unfortunately I disliked Penny May from quite early in the book - annoying, rude, and she blunders through her 'investigation'. Two stars because I did finish it

Needing to earn money after taking her university degree Victorian lady Marianne Starr takes employment as an investigator to unmask fake mediums. But she is approached by George Bartholomew, who has just returned from Prussia, and after seeing his father for the first time in many years is convinced he is an imposter, and wants Marianne to prove it. But this is just the start of her problems. There is the situation of her cousin by marriage, Price Claverdon, and Jack Monahan.
An enjoyable story with some varied characters, mostly likeable. A good start to a new series, which I looking forward to reading,

On visiting the local town she is drawn by the crowds to a house where a killing has occurred. With her trusted servants she decides to try and find the killer as a wager.
Though it took a while for Cordelia to start investigating I found the style of writing very easy to read, drawing you along, and the likable characters have formed a basis for the next book.… (altro)
