Anne Bronte was the daughter of an impoverished clergyman of Haworth in Yorkshire, England. Considered by many critics as the least talented of the Bronte sisters, Anne wrote two novels. Agnes Grey (1847) is the story of a governess, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848), is a tale of the evils of mostra altro drink and profligacy. Her acquaintance with the sin and wickedness shown in her novels was so astounding that Charlotte Bronte saw fit to explain in a preface that the source of her sister's knowledge of evil was their brother Branwell's dissolute ways. Breve biografia: Anne was the youngest of the Brontë siblings. She worked as a governess and wrote stories and poetry with her sisters. Her literary reputation is based mainly on the two novels she published before her untimely death at age 29. Like her older sisters, she used a masculine-sounding pseudonym, Acton Bell, for publication of her writing because of 19th-century prejudice against female authors.

Charlotte, Emily e Anne Bronte Lettere di Charlotte Emil Anne Bronte

La voce che domina questo epistolario è quella di Charlotte. È lei infatti a sopravvivere alle sorelle e al fratello, facendosi testimone della malattia che si insinua prima in Anne e poi in Emily perciò qui le sue lettere sono le più numerose e dense di riferimenti alle vicende esistenziali dell'l’intera famiglia.

La signora di Wildfell Hall di Anne Brontë

Anne è la meno famosa delle sorelle Anne Brontë, e forse capiamo anche perché. Il romanzo affronta temi importanti e sicuramente molto impegnativi per l'epoca ma la struttura è contorta, complicata, cambia registri e narratori, parte come epistolario che poi si perde trasformandosi in un diario scritto venti anni prima. Una gran fatica è anche correre dietro a una folla di personaggi dai cognomi tutti tragicamente quasi uguali. Magari per un inglese è facile distinguerli, per me meno.
La lettura è comunque quasi sempre piacevole, salvo un arrotolarsi su se stessa della narrazione che occupa le ultime cento pagine e che sa un po' di tentativo di allungare il brodo per rispettare la tradizione di riempire i canonici tre volumi nei quali tutti i romanzi vittoriani dovevano strutturarsi.… (altro)
