Thoughtful book told from the perspective of a boy in California whose lunch is stolen by a homeless boy displaced by wildfires. Useful for starting conversations about wildfires, trauma-induced stress behaviors, homelessness and food insecurity. Positive depictions of Hispanic children and families. If it sounds preachy with all these SEL and equity learning categories, it really isn't -- it's just a nice little story about building friendships in tough times.

Intermediate; Realistic Fiction; This is about a young boy that steals other kids' lunches. Before getting angry one of the other boys takes the time to learn that he is homeless and living in a hotel. The boy and his mother decide to make him a lunch and Rafael invites him to eat with he and his friend at lunch. Great for children who may need a reminder that people go through hard things and we can never judge what we see.

A very accessible book of poetry. They are snapshots of moments, people, places. The first poem, for example, begins at a funeral, which evokes a memory from the poet's childhood - playing in a basement with the son of the man who is her mother's lover and her father. Each poem is a window that shows only a hint of what is outside the frame.

It is a good example of realistic fiction because it is talking about a real-life story between two students.
Kevin always stole others lunch which annoys the boy a lot. Once his mum told him that the boy's property may destroyed by fire, the boy starts to share lunch with Kevin.
Hunger is hidden. We tend to judge things before knowing reasons. This is a good book of sharing and caring.
Good to all ages
