Thinking of starting a makerspace in your school or library? You need this book to show you how.

This book was okay but it is best for a school who is totally new to creating and implementing maker spaces. I was looking so something more specific.

I really loved this book! The title doesn't do it justice. What this book is, is a treasure trove of ideas, experiences, tips, and suggestions that will help any teacher begin to provide opportunities for students to create in the classroom. Yet, it's detailed enough that even a veteran Makerspace director will get new ideas and valuable resources! I've been teaching 4th and 5th grade for 20 years, and have had a modified makerspace in the classroom for the past 6 or 7 and this book seemed to affirm so many of the things we are doing in our room and gave me several new ideas I need to try out! I especially love the lists that were included. Here are just a few that I loved:
- Social Emotional Outcomes of Makerspaces (page 36)
- Donation List Ideas (supplies)(95)
- Items you may want to add as your Makerspace grows (99-100)
- Task Cards if your students need explicit directions (108-111)
- Books that Inspire Makerspace Thinking (112-115)
I highly recommend this book to any teacher, administrator, or parent wishing to provide opportunities for children to build, design, create, disassemble, iterate, etc. I wish all classrooms included activities like these throughout their instruction! Finally, the book is written in a very comfortable, familiar voice. She is definitely one of us: a teacher through and through! (I was given a free copy of this book from LibraryThing for my honest opinion.)

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Great resource for building a Makerspace - collaborative work spaces for making, learning, and sharing - in your school. This book provides a step-by-step model for creating a school wide area for STEAM exploration. Each month features certain skills as well as opportunities for planning and reflection.
