I think I'm getting very unforgiving in my old age; I put this aside after fifty pages of Celtic muddle, with an emotional setup for the two protagonists (fairy king and mortal woman) that did not make sense to me and bordered on some potentially abusive territory (he is wooing her by bonking her in her dreams). I really enjoyed this book. I found Paul Brandon's writing to be engaging and descriptive. It gave the reader the unique feeling that this was a story that could just occur in the middle of anyone's life. The author did a beautiful job of making the characters regular people going about their lives, while the fantastical world of faery happened all around them, always just beneath the surface of every day life. I enjoyed the choice of mythical creatures - I dont think there are that many book about Selkies (would welcome suggestions)

I could see the plot coming, though, and I cannot help to think that more could have been made of the story. There is a nice tie in with the distant past and some great descriptions of traditional song and music, makes me want to listen to some, but somehow it fell a little flat for me. Still, a nice summer read.

I loved the mythological aspect of this book, and the sense of place that the author created. I was completely captive until the end of it.
