The subtitle of this book pretty much sums up what it is; an overview of Bowles' public service between 1941 and 1969, when he served as OPA Administrator, Congressman, Governor, Ambassador to India (twice) and various State Department jobs. The first part of the book, dealing with his tenure at OPA, and during his heavy involvement in Connecticut politics, is rather more interesting. Also rather barbed and waspish towards the large majority of his Republican opponents, which is perhaps to be expected. The inside scoop on Raymond Baldwin's resignation as U.S. Senator is one of the most interesting interludes. The second part of the book, which covers most of Bowles' diplomatic career, is rather drier and filled with a great deal of policy wonk-ness; not that the Connecticut parts didn't have that, but there's not a whole lot to relieve it. You get a great sense of frustration throughout the book -- Bowles doesn't seem like the type to have taken defeat or setbacks very easily.
