Good book on history of mass market paperbacks in America.
Best feature is all the examples of paperback covers of which there are 72 B&W, 113 color. The history is fine. I wouldnt be surprised if the description of how covers are commissioned is still accurate. Skeptical that advice from 1982 on collecting is relevant. Prices throughout are quaintly low.
High Traffic is a very interesting biography of the publisher New American Library (NAL) and those who ran it. With the slogan "Rich reading at low prices," NAL was instrumental in changing the face of publishing through the mass market production and distribution of everything from classics and reprints to academic work and genre fiction - all at prices affordable to everyday consumers. This book covers NAL's history from the age of the 25 cent novels in the late 1940s up to 1990. Lots of anecdotes about some of the more famous writers in their stable, including Mikey Spillane, Chester Himes, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Ayn Rand, Truman Capote, William Faulkner, J.D. Salinger, Isaac Asimov, and Erskine Caldwell.… (altro)
