Horace Mann Bond was an important figure in the history of education in the South in the twentieth century. He later visited Africa as an honored guest after many countries became independant. While this book focuses on black education it is also a history of post Civil War education in all of the South and deals with what C. Vann Buren called "the burden of Southern history". I later met his widow who became a librarian working long into what would have been retirement years.

Reading this book as a resource for research on the history of a former school near my hometown.
