- Prof. dr. Willem Pieter (Wim) was born in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1945. Ph.D. from the University of Ghent (1973). Professor of Social History at Erasmus University Rotterdam 1975-1987. Professor of Medieval History at Leiden University since 1987. Rector of NIAS since September 2002.
Editor-in-chief of the twelve-volume series 'The Roots of Western Civilization', published in 1992-94 in Dutch, English and Finnish, with compact editions in French and Dutch, and of the seven-volume series Origins of the Modern State, published by Oxford UP and Presses Universitaires de France in 1995-1999.
