Unita Blackwell was born U. Z. Brown in Lula, Mississippi on March 18, 1933. She left school at the age of 12. Besides a short time peeling tomatoes in Florida, she picked cotton until the age of 31. In 1964, she signed up with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to help register black mostra altro people to vote. She marched, filed lawsuits, and was jailed numerous times as she pressed for voting rights. She also helped integrate Mississippi's schools. In 1976, she became the first black woman to be elected a mayor in Mississippi. She served for more than 20 years. Her memoir, Barefootin': Life Lessons from the Road to Freedom written with JoAnne Prichard Morris, was published in 2006. She died from complications of dementia on May 13, 2019 at the age of 86. From the time I found out about this book, I have been trying to get it; When I finally was able to buy the book and before it was delivered to me, I ended up getting a copy of the same book from the library; very interesting autobiography of a black woman who was born in Mississippi, and got into the civil rights movement in order to have a better life and in turn, she did get one; She was able to vote in a state that didn't allow blacks to vote; she became the mayor of a small town there, Mayersville, Miss; which is close to Rolling Fork; she ended up becoming friends with Presidents, movie stars such as Shirley Mclaine, who took her on her first trip to China; she has since been back more than 30 times. She has been on various committees with Presidents and other influential people, so it was a good thing that she took the road she did; Of course, she had some setbacks as well, but she takes it with a grain of salt and keeps on moving.… (altro)
