An anthology of poetry by American poets with disabilities—including but not limited to aphasia due to stroke, blindness, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and deafness—interspersed with essays related to the theme of how disability poetry has evolved on a macro and micro level, i.e., collective disability poetry and personally, for some disabled individuals. Some of the poets featured: Larry Eigner (cerebral palsy; d. 1996), Tom Andrews (hemophiliac); Vassar Miller (cerebral palsy; d. 1998); Robert Fagan, Josephine Miles (nearly lifelong crippling rheumatoid arthritis), Lucia Perillo (multiple sclerosis), Jim Ferris (fragmenting femur in one leg), *Kenny Fries (missing bones in both legs), *Petra Kuppers (wheelchair). Some of this poetry was beautiful; some of it did not grab me at all.… (altro)

(altro)

I liked this book for a few reasons. First, this book is about a classic story all children know. Young children are always told the story of the tooth fairy and that when they lose a tooth, to put it under their pillow so that the tooth fairy will come. Secondly, this book describes where the tooth fairy gets her coins. As a child, I always wondered the tooth fairy got her coins. In the land where the fairies live, there is a waterfall of silver coins. "Astrid, the youngest fairy,...she wore a silver coin from the waterfall around her neck." Finally, I liked that this book explained how the tooth fairy got her fairy name and the journey she took to figure out her special job. While all the fairies already had special jobs, Astrid did not fit in with the other fairies. She first tried to change the colors of the fall leaves and made them blue and pink instead of their normal red and gold colors. Another time she tried to make a rainbow but used too much paint causing the colors to run together. After many failed attempts, Astrid wondered how she would bring joy to the children of Earth. Her journey brought her to discovering her true calling of being the tooth fairy.… (altro)
