Return to Cranford [DVD] di Judi Dench
It's difficult to know why there is a slightly unsatisfactory air to this sequel. The performances, settings, story etc are all good, in some cases very good. But the sentimentality which always lurked at the heart of the first series is in more evidence here, and the makers have not been able ro resist little flourishes like the end of film party to soup things up. Perhaps they would argue that this is Mrs Gaskell and not George Eliot - more the pity.
This is the well-known and excellent adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel. Made as a mini-series by the BBC, with Colin Firth as Mr Darcy.
It's long, but then so is the book. The production is extremely well done and sticks closely to the story.
Thoroughly enjoyable.

Not sure why I should enjoy watching these Jane Austen films so much with my wife and daughter. Perhaps it's that the stories and settings are interesting. Ehle and Firth are memorable here, making this superior to the Keira Knightley version. But much longer....
