The author describes all the stories she writes as being ‘full of quirky characters and strange worlds and unusual situations’, with the Fae Sagas being ‘a series of books on the magic, mystery, and mayhem of the world of the Fae and the Ancient Ones’ and this enchanting story for teens/young adults encapsulates each aspect of these descriptions. It is a fast-moving story which immediately catapults the reader into a mysterious, magical, mythical world, one which is full of beauty and kindness but also of darkness and danger. The author has created a wonderful cast of characters, with each so vividly portrayed that I felt able to immediately visualise them and to feel drawn into the various fantastical adventures they embarked on. I’m not going to go into any detail about the plot because the magic of the story depends on how this unfolds, but I loved entering Ava’s magical world and joining her on her journey as she begins to discover her true heritage and to learn how to unlock, and use, the special powers she has been endowed with. Although there are malign forces intent on preventing her from fulfilling her quest, she is also surrounded by characters who are equally intent on loving and protecting her – her thirteen aunts, Commander George of the faery realm, her friends Morgan and Tarran, Samphire the dragon, an army of dragonfly soldiers, Grandmother Apple who can curve one of her branches round Ava in a loving embrace, the centuries old Grandfather Oak, whose roots connect with the worlds beneath whilst his branches connect the lands above and whose trunk twists and opens like a space capsule – to name just a few!
The author includes an appendix which offers a timeline of Fae Ages, the different times and seasons in the world of Fae and, finally, her hand-drawn illustrations of each member of The Thirteen and their lineage. Although I found these additions quite interesting, I didn’t find that they added anything of real significance to the story – but I did enjoy the insights they offered into her richly imagined world.
It was clear from the start that this story is a follow-on from a previous one and although that didn’t prevent me from enjoying it, in the early stages of my reading I found myself trying to work out what had gone before so I’m sure it would be more satisfying to read the books in sequence.

Was an amazing book. I hadn't read the first one, but I was able to pick up the storyline very quickly and immerse myself in the book. Would defenitely reccommend if you are looking for a quick and easy read before going to bed at night and want some magic.
