Cherney Berg

I was browsing through Hoopla and came across this curiosity. Written by Cherney Berg, whom I can't find too much about other than that he was a screenwriter with just a few credits (see IMDB), I was drawn to it by Gabriell Dell. Dell was, of course (and if you're not nodding "of course" then your cinematic education is lacking), one of the Dead End Kids. So naturally, I wanted to hear how he could handle Frankenstein and Dracula. This is an audio recording, one of those odd monster-themed albums they used to make back in the 60s. My best friend growing up had one, for instance, which when I finally heard it, I realized was a major source for many of the expressions he used over and over--"quaintence quaintence" being my favorite. Figure it out for yourself. In any case, the first half of this album purports to be an actual audio recording of the Frankenstein Monster, and boy is he pissed. Amazingly, in addition to reanimating a dead body, Doctor Frankenstein created a recording machine which somehow accompanied the monster on his rampages! Hmmm. Seems a bit far-fetched. In any case, Dell's performance is great. This is a very well-spoken monster who hates Doctor Frankenstein for what he has done to him and is seeking his revenge. He is in some ways sympathetic, but still pure evil. Quite entertaining. The second side of the record concerns someone venturing into Dracula's layer deep beneath the British Museum. Dracula is an urbane--though deadly--host. He does have a bit of the Lugosi accent. Again, well done. This is a good investment of your 41 minutes.… (altro)
