- Stan Barstow was born in 1928 in the West Riding of Yorkshire. His father was a coal miner, and he was the only son.
He attended Ossett Grammar School, and left at sixteen to join a local engineering firm, working in the drawing office. Seven years later, he moved to a similar position in another firm, and from there moved into the sales department.
He started writing in the fifties, and had some short stories broadcast by the BBC. His first published work (as Stanley Barstow) was the short story The Search for Tommy Flynn in number 8 of the Putnam series of books Pick of Today's Short Stories in 1957. (This story was reprinted in The Desperadoes in 1962.)
An unpublished novel in 1956 was followed by A Kind of Loving in 1960. This was a major success, and was made into a film starring Alan Bates and June Ritchie. Since then he has been a full time writer, and has written eleven novels and three books of short stories. He has also written TV scripts and for the radio and theatre.
His books have been translated into several languages, and are widely read in schools.
He is an honorary Master of Arts of the Open University, and also a Fellow of Academi (the Welsh National Literature Promotion Agency).
He was married for thirty-nine years, and has two children. He has lived for most of his life in his native Yorkshire, but has recently moved to South Wales. His latest book is his autobiography, In My Own Good Time, which was published in October 2001.

Vikovi je právě dvacet let a hrozně se mu líbí Ingrid Rothwellová. Je krásná, pořád jako ze škatulky, úplně jiná než holky, které znal jako kluk z hornické rodiny, prostě nedostižný idol. Zná ji jen od vidění z ranních cest do závodu, kde pracuje jako kreslič a Ingrid jako písařka. Avšak Vikovi se přece jen podaří tu hlubokou propast mezi nimi překlenout a znenadání začne něco jako láska... Jenomže prvotní okouzlení se brzy změní v trpké rozčarování a trvá dlouho, než se oba mladí lidé umoudří.
Tento příběh lásky se odehrává na pozadí života nevelkého průmyslového města v severní Anglii a zpestřuje jej celá řada mistrovsky vystižených postav, kamarádů a rodičů Vika a Ingrid, vylíčených se smyslem pro humor. This is a more-or-less chronological description of novelist and playwright Stan Barstow's life, from his early memories of a working-class upbringing in Ossett, West Yorkshire, in the 1930's, to his reflections on his life and achievements in the mid-to-late 1990's.
There are some glorious observations on the way through, notably his serious appreciation of music (both classical and jazz), his dissection of the technique of writing as a form of craft requiring discipline and application and his journeys to various Eastern bloc countries, both before and after the fall of the Berlin wall.
The authors life and loves are described, too, but not in a way in which they overpower his own development as a writer. There are, too, plenty of references to his contemporaries, including John Braine, Sid Chaplin, David Storey and Keith Waterhouse.
On a personal note, I was delighted to discover (on pg. 149) a vignette about Maria Tobin before she contracted Alzheimer's disease. In this latter state, she would go on to feature in a most moving film in 1993. (A name-check here, then, for "Black Daisies for the Bride" by Tony Harrison. If you haven't seen it, you should seek it out).
Barstow's autobiography is an enjoyable read, with plenty of local colour and interest.
Perhaps it's worth adding, too, that the book is beautifully designed, set, bound and weighted. It's good to see that the publishers - Smith Settle Ltd of Otley - are still producing high quality work today.… (altro)

The protagonist, Victor, is a young, bright working class son-of-a-miner, just discovering females, and focussing on one young woman in particular.
The first half is essentially about Victor falling in love, and while the evocation of these feelings is very well done, this section does wear a little eventually. But it is necessary to set up the later sections where things get more complicated for Vic, and the book regained my interest.
It's a very good book - compellingly realistic, with real-world, relatable concerns and well depicted characters. Possibly the most distinctive thing about the book, though, is Barstow's wonderful use of the Yorkshire dialect. In his hands the language is so rich and expressive, it really elevates A Kind Of Loving from an interesting story to a compelling and immersive novel.… (altro)
