Louis Auchincloss was born on September 27, 1917 in New York. He attended Groton College and Yale University and received a law degree from the University of Virginia. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War ll. A practicing attorney, Auchincloss wrote his first novel, "The mostra altro Indifferent Children," in 1947 under the pseudonym Andrew Lee, establishing a dual career as a successful lawyer and writer. Born into a socially prominent family, Auchincloss generally writes about society's upper class. Strong family connections, well-bred manners, and corporate boardrooms are subject matter in such novels as "Portrait in Brownstone" and "I Come As a Thief." He has also written several biographical and critical works on such notable writers as Edith Wharton and Henry James. Auchincloss was President of the Museum of the City of New York. Dark Lady di Louis Auchincloss

I found it fun for the first three-quarters of the book, in a can't-believe-these-characters-and-their-scheming kind of entertaining way. But then I got to the last section, where the scheming became mean and ratcheted up quite a bit. It seemed, to me, very different from what came before. Political whisper campaigns and Joe McCarthy influences tainted it all for me. It wasn't just a good read to pass the time, anymore. The last section contains an unforgettable, though very brief, suicide scene. Reading this also reminded me that I need to have a dictionary at hand whenever I read Auchincloss (odalisque, exiguous, vicereine, to name a few).… (altro)

Diary of a Yuppie di Louis Auchincloss

Cayman 2024 - #9 - Not one of my favorite Auchincloss......while he has great insight into the world of high-end financial lawyering and the office politics that go along, this tale of morality left me sort of empty.....all of the players involved in the dilemmas of legal vs. moral and/or ethical were not people i could care much about. They all seemed to have their good points....but not enough to get me on their side to cheer. The accompanying love story was slightly unrealistic, and again....I struggled to care. (I liked the E-Type Jaguar on the cover! Although it was never mentioned in the book!) So, while i still love the Auchincloss style....and i still have many to read....this one will land relatively far down my list of favorites.… (altro)
