Margaret Atwood was born on November 18, 1939 in Ottawa, Canada. She received a B.A. from Victoria College, University of Toronto in 1961 and an M.A. from Radcliff College in 1962. Her first book of verse, Double Persephone, was published in 1961 and was awarded the E. J. Pratt Medal. She has mostra altro published numerous books of poetry, novels, story collections, critical work, juvenile work, and radio and teleplays. Her works include The Journals of Susanna Moodie, Power Politics, Cat's Eye, The Robber Bride, Morning in the Buried House, the MaddAdam trilogy, and The Heart Goes Last. She has won numerous awards including the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, the Booker Prize in 2000 for The Blind Assassin, the Giller Prize and the Premio Mondello for Alias Grace, and the Governor General's Award in 1966 for The Circle Game and in 1986 for The Handmaid's Tale, which also won the very first Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1987. She won the PEN Pinter prize in 2016 for her political activism. She was awarded the 2016 PEN Pinter Prize for the outstanding literary merit of her body of work. Purtroppo però questa patriarcale unione di Stato e Chiesa non protegge affatto le donne, ma anzi incoraggia la loro oggettificazione, lo slut-shaming, la violenza sessuale entro le mura domestiche, gli abusi di potere, il divieto di accesso a un qualunque tipo di istruzione, la proibizione di mostrare il proprio corpo e qualunque altra gabbia nella quale, nel corso della storia, il genere femminile è stato rinchiuso: Il racconto dell’ancella ci mostra senza pietà tutta la ferocia del patriarcato e ci dimostra con lucidità quanto esso sia un sistema sociale che stritola le persone, mietendo vittime tanto tra le donne quanto tra gli uomini.
Sarebbe già terrificante così, eppure l’aspetto peggiore de Il racconto dell’ancella è il fatto che niente nel mondo distopico creato da Margaret Atwood è inventato o portato all’esasperazione, com’è tipico di questo genere letterario. Per stessa ammissione dell’autrice, infatti, una delle sue regole durante la stesura del romanzo era: nessun aggeggio tecnologico immaginario, nessuna legge immaginaria, nessuna atrocità immaginaria. Quindi, qualunque cosa leggiate in questo libro è accaduta davvero in un certo momento della nostra storia e in una determinata parte della Terra e la mancata eradicazione del patriarcato fa sì che qualcosa del genere, date le giuste circostanze, possa accadere di nuovo.
Ecco perché, con l’arrivo di Donald Trump alla Casa Bianca, questo romanzo è tornato in auge e la serie televisiva trattane che debutterà il 26 aprile prossimo su Hulu ha riscosso così tanto interesse: con il suo linguaggio violento e sessista, il nuovo presidente degli USA ha aperto numerose crepe nell’unico muro che vale la pena di erigere, cioè quello tra Stato e religioni, e ha legittimato di nuovo tutta una serie di atteggiamenti discriminatori nei confronti di donne e minoranze. Questo è inaccettabile e Il racconto dell’ancella è qui per dirci che non dobbiamo mai abbassare la guardia e mai cedere terreno perché l’eteropatriarcato è ancora in mezzo a noi e non dobbiamo permettergli di alzare troppo la voce, correndo il rischio che si faccia dei nuovi amici.… (altro)
