Gr 2–4—This slice-of-life chapter book explores Tola's life as a young girl in Lagos, Nigeria. The smallest in her
family, she is teased because of her size, but she is reminded through tiny feats of might and bravery (and
mathematics) that strength comes from within. Sweet monochrome illustrations bring Tola's bustling world to life and
showcase cultural customs alongside examples of healthy communication and blossoming self-confidence.

This book would be good for intermediate students. This book is "Too Small Tola" written by Atinuke, illustrated by Onyinye Iwu, and published in 2020. This book is about a girl named Tola who can do anything she puts her mind to despite her small size and young age. I think this would be a good book in the classroom to teach kids that just because they are young, they can still do mighty things. This book has a lot of words and the pictures are all in black and white so this is a more advanced early chapter book, but still very simple and easy to understand.… (altro)

I enjoyed this book. I think it is very empowering especially for young girls who might have something working against them like their size, religion, ethnicity and many other factors. This book focuses on a young Nigerian girl who is very small for her size but she is very determined. I think this book is for the intermediate age

This is my favorite Anna Hibiscus so far (my 6yo and I have read almost all of them). Atinuke has touched on poverty before in her stories, like when Anna goes to the poorest part of the city and finds children playing in a rubbish heap. In this story, Anna and her big girl cousins go to their grandparents' village on vacation. There is no school there so Anna teaches some village children ABCs and 123s. She also meets an orphaned boy who is on his own.

Despite the hard truths in this story, the telling is warm and optimistic. These books seem aimed at early chapter book readers, ages 6 to 9 or so. There are not many books for this age that take on such difficult topics and probably even fewer that do it so well.… (altro)
