- As young women, Margot Tennant and her sister Laura were the central female figures of a loose-knit group of British intellectuals, politicians, and aristocrats known as "The Souls." In 1894, Margot married widower H.H. (Herbert Henry) Asquith, who became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916. In the 1920s, they were made Earl and Countess of Oxford and Asquith. She was famous for her outspokenness and candour, and wrote several volumes of memoirs and autobiography. Her diaries covering the years 1914-16 were published in June 2014 as Margot Asquith's Great War Diaries.

Fascinating and well edited. Goes well with the editors' other work on the Asquiths, which together form a real labour of love and scholarship.
Married to Herbert H. Asquith, (1852 – 1928) Margot (1865 – 1945) (née Tennant, step-Grandmother of the modern actress Helena Bonham Carter), shows us upper Class Liberal life in the period of her husband's second marriage and Prime Ministry. (1908-16). There are portraits of her rivals, and some are quite insightful, but her friends are always “Polite, Simple and Direct.” Chapter XII deals with the kind of attacks successful politicians and their families were subjected to during the War. This autobiography was not as cruel as her diaries, apparently. There is practically nothing in this volume about Churchill.… (altro)
Vol. I of this memoir is uneven and disjointed but gives a light overview of Asquith's childhood with emphasis on the impact her sister’s early death had on her.
Vol II is better focused on providing portraits of major political figure of her day, extensive anecdotes about foxhunting, her first serious romance, and an overview of her courtship and early married years to her husband, who became Prime Minister. Nothing really insightful as a character study or assessment of her period of British history and government here, although she was a keenly interested political animal herself.
But several very honest character self-portraits, conversational anecdotes, and some clear-eyed assessments of several major players in late Victorian English politics and letters, including Henry James, the Prince of Wales, and prominent Oxford tutors can be found.
This autobiographical sketch, really, is interesting in its way, but is not well written, comprehensive, or cohesive. However, what does come through is Margot Asquith had what even today would be considered a rather modern personality and moderately liberal inclination combined with a sincere religious belief. She is undoubtedly a woman whose greatest talent was in being an excellent friend, an uncommon quality in any time.… (altro)

Lively and intersting--I read it compulsively and finished it in a couple of days, even though it only covers part of her early life before her marriage to H.H. Asquith Gives a vivid impression of growing up in Scotland and London in the family of a well-to-do businesman on the fringe of the political elite (her father was a LIberal and she grew up knowing Gladstone et al.) Striking that in her generation she and many of her friends were still devoutly religious and attempted to bring religion to factory women etc.… (altro)
