Asia Society

"Art and China's Revolution" chronicles a period considered to be one of the most tumulturous in recent Chinese history. It takes an in-depth look at the period obetween the 1950s and the 1970s, focusing on the formation of a new visual culture and how it was given priority over artistic traditions such as ink paintings. This was part of a boader national program to modernize China, and it had a great impact on artists and their work. One of the most significant developments was the introduction of socialist realism.

This is a catalogue for an American touring exhibition of Haniwa, ancient Japanese clay figures, held at The Asia Society in 1959.

'Haniwa, "clay cylinders," were apparently created to be set up on or around these burial mounds. They are for the most part exactly what their name incidates... but a fair number of them were topped with representational sculpture of a distinctive type. It is these pieces which have captured the attention of modern artists and historians, and which have given us a wealth of information on the life of ancient times.'
