First, let me say that Livingston is very much a man of his time, and the bold racist comments in this book -"blackest Congo ni****s," for example - should be noted. That said, otherwise this is a fun book about an interesting man at an interesting time. In many ways, he was a horrible person, conning people out of money, but he's just so charming and has such incredible tales, that it's easy to overlook these incidents and get lost in the stories of people and places of a time that no longer exists. I took off half a star for the blatant racism, otherwise this is a terrific, quick, read. It's public domain but out of print, so I read my copy on Google books. With some editing, this would be a fine opportunity for a small publisher to reprint.… (altro)
