De wereld van het design is in de war. De markt is overvoerd met producten, ontwerpers en bedrijven, waarvan het gros bestaat uit imitaties en epigonen die elkaar verdringen. Disciplines onderscheiden zich steeds minder, labels fuseren, designbedrijven gaan over de kop. Oude waarden botsen met nieuwe. De wereldeconomie beleeft een neergang terwijl de belangstelling voor het lokale aspect juist groeit. Tijd om de rol van de ontwerper en de waarde en betekenis van design te heroverwegen. Wat is een wezenlijk hedendaagse ontwerphouding en wat is eigentijds design? Over die vragen buigt Bright Minds, Beautiful ideas zich. Het is een inspirerend en actief ideeënboek, dat via de koppen en handen van vier vernieuwende en invloedrijke ontwerpers een perspectief voor het heden (en wellicht de toekomst) schetst. Ondanks verschillen in achtergrond en werkperiode delen Bruno Munari (Italië 1907-1998), Charles en Ray Eames (USA 1907-1978 en 1912-1988), Marti Guixé (Spanje 1964) en Jurgen Bey (Nederland 1965) een aantal kenmerken die voor ontwerpen van wezenlijk belang zijn. Ze bevragen alles, zijn in staat fantasie, speelsheid en onderzoek te koppelen aan visie, cultuur aan economie en wetenschap, nieuwsgierigheid en openheid aan maatschappelijke betrokkenheid en actie. Hun werk en visie zijn tijdloos en van hun tijd. Gerd Arntz was a German graphic artist who together with Otto Neurath revolutionized the graphic presentation of statistics. Escaping from Austrofascism to the Netherlands, the two developed ISOTYPE, a pioneering set of icons to explain social statistics and public policy. The unexpected Nazi invasion of the Netherlands split the two leftists. Otto Neurath managed in the last minute to flee to England, Uninformed, Arntz was swept up in the German invasion and later forced into German military service. After the war, Otto Neurath intervened to get Arntz out of captivity. Neurath's death in 1945 ended their partnership. Gerd Arntz continued their mission, designing graphics for the Dutch statistical yearbook. Their overall influence suffered, however, by their stay in Europe. Had they gone to America, like many other Austrian Jews that created the field of marketing, their names would have become common knowledge beyond the tiny circle of connoisseurs who are aware of their work now.

This beautifully designed and lavishly illustrated overview of Gerd Arntz' work helps to increase public awareness about their work. My favorite graphic is the illustration of how long do animals live. Pearl mussels apparently live to a surprising 67 years of age. Swans enjoy a life expectancy of almost 50 years ... a good illustration truly draws you in.… (altro)
