A giant mess of a book that makes me wonder if an editor was ever involved. While I feel for the author’s struggles with mental illness, his chronicling of them within Elisa’s narrative is disrespectful at best.
I didn't give this much of a chance to impress me. I think it could have been interesting, but Erik Bloomquist - the narrator - my goodness - he has the flattest voice. He does his best to have no change of pitch at all!
I desperately wanted to like this book but it fell so short of my expectations. I had already seen the Netflix documentary (recommend that if you really want to get into details about the Elisa Lam case) so knew a fair amount of what happened. While there were some shocking new revelations, those didn’t come until much later in the book. The book was way too long and went too in depth on Anderson’s own mental health challenges, which could have and should be a separate book. TLDR: watch the Netflix doc instead.
