I admire anyone who can expose themselves and become vulnerable to the public by sharing their story, so others can learn or so they don't feel so alone in this big old world! I loved this memoir because not only was it honest, but it was also funny, raw, and engaging. It was brilliant and I really appreciate the fact that it was shared out for all of us to enjoy.… (altro)

A memoir which alternates between hilarity and deep sadness as Alterman tells the story of the deep bond she shared with the father she adored and her shock and confusion at learning he had been an author of funny, porno "self-help" books. She shares how this knowledge affected her teenage and young adult dating years, with stories that are both appalling and funny at the same time. There is almost a kind of happily-ever-after conclusion when, into her late twenties, she finally meets and marries Sam, but then the story takes a much darker turn when her father, Ira, begins acting strangely and is diagnosed with Alzheimer's and begins a rapid downward spiral into madness. I chuckled and laughed initially, but then, well, much to think about here. My daughter, about the same age as the author, gifted me this book for Father's Day. Hmm ... LET'S NEVER TALK ABOUT THIS AGAIN okay, Suzie? (But I'm leaving you the "family business.") Very highly recommended.
