"Off to War" In 1939, Pan Am Clippers were crowded with diplomats, refugees and thousands of pounds of priority mail. When U.S. entered the war, only 11 great trans-oceanic Clippers, nine Boeing 314's and two Martin 130's were available... Altogether Pan Am at this time 148 planes of varying size, but only 11 trans-oceanic.
