I confess this was a bit of slog for me to get through; as someone who saw me with the book remarked, "that's awfully long for an 'essay.'" In retrospect, once you have a grasp of his thesis from the early chapters, it may not be necessary to work through all the subsequent explanations.

"The customary view is that the Chicago school [of sociology] comprises a period [roughly 1915-1935], a set of professors [Park, Burgess, Faris, Thomas], a set of students [Wirth, Blummer, etc.], and a body of work.
