Some of Japan's most important cultural values are reflected in the urban planning of its cities. Tokyo is world-renowned as a city of modern architectural design, employing much that is experimental as well as new. In doing so, Tokyo like many cities in Japan, is in a continuous state of demolishing and rebuilding. This is in direct contrast to many of the great cities of the West which have made conscious efforts to preserve their architectural past.
