Edgar Rice Burroughs nevét leginkább Tarzan miatt ismerjük, de elég sok más ponyvát is írt. A Barsoom (John Carter) sorozatot is olvastam (mind a 11 kötetet) ennek egy része magyarul is megjelent. Ilyen könyveket inkább persze irodalomtörténeti érdekességként olvas az ember, de minden hibája mellett azért elég sok jó ötlet volt ezekben a regényekben, érdekes volt későbbi híres sci-fi művek előképeit megismerni.

Az "At the earth's core" a Pellucidar sorozat első kötete, az alapötlet hasonló a Barsoomhoz, főhősünk egy teljesen új világba kerül, ahol sok érdekes dologgal találkozik, és mivel van valami különleges képessége, ezért meglepően sikeres lesz. Az új világ itt egy elég jó ötlet: a Föld üreges, így a földkéreg túlsó oldalán is élnek emberek. Ez egyrészt nyilván nem így van, de az elmélet egy időben elég népszerű volt, maga Halley (akiről az üstököst elnevezték) is írt róla cikket. Bár a könyv megjelenésekor az elméletet már cáfolták, regényötletnek ez elég jó. Az már kicsit nagyobb baj, hogy a fizika törvényei sem úgy működnek ahogy a könyv leírja, de tekintve, hogy a semmivel sem kisebb marhaságnak tűnő laposföld elméletnek is sok a híve manapság, teljesen vállalható kiinduló pontja ez a sorozatnak.

A főhős különleges képessége itt valószerűbb mint a Barsoom sorozatban: mivel a belső világban az őskorban jár még az emberiség, egy XX. századi ember tudása tényleg nagy kincs, elég csak arra gondolni, mennyire meglepődik mindenki, amikor először íjat lát. Az pedig, hogy utalás van arra is, hogy hiába jön modern korból az ember, nem feltétlenül van meg nincs nála minden tudás elég valószerűnek tűnik.

A könyv egyébként klasszikus ponyvaregény, a főhős mindig bajba kerül, amiből mindig kivágja magát, és hasonlóan Barsoomhoz itt is egy gyönyörű nő megmentése az egyik cél. A fő gondom a könyvvel az, hogy az alapötleten túl nincs benne túl sok eredeti ötlet, pont az hiányzik a könyvből, ami érdekessé tette a Barsoom köteteket. ( )

Entertaining pulp fiction adventure. Easy to read. Characters soemwhat 2 dimensional. Relaxation read and quick to get through. The Barsoom series is better - read that as a teen. ( )

In the continuing spirit of trying to remember every bk I've ever read, I'm going to list all the Edgar Rice Burroughs Pellucidar bks - adventures in the Hollow Earth. I read them devotedly when I was about 13 to 15 & enjoyed them alot. I also pretty much wrote them off as trash. ERB wrote an enormous amt & I probably read at least 1 of the Mars novels too. Doubt that I'll ever read anything else by him but I'm ALMOST curious to see what my 13 yr old mind got out of these. ( )

I originally picked up At the Earth’s Core by Edgar Rice Burroughs out of my older brother’s book collection. As a kid, I was intrigued by the racy Frank Frazetta cover and thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. Burroughs was the creator of Tarzan and the Princess of Mars series, but I liked Pellucidar/At the Earth’s Core series best followed by The Land that Time Forgot. Both were made into truly terrible but entertaining films starring Doug McClure (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKH14HKweKE). The premise is that the Earth is hollow and below us is another world filled with prehistoric monsters and primitive people. I recently picked up this one and Tanar of Pellucidar at a used book shop for old time’s sake. Re-reading this 1914 novel with 21st Century awareness and wondering what the hell. I give it five stars for being a quick read and adventure, but negative stars for being uncomfortably unwoke.

My kid saw the paperback lying around and asked if she could read it when I was done. I did give her a warning, but I’m curious to see her reaction. ( )
