It was refreshing to see it was less open than the movie. Heathers references and spontaneous bursts of Le Tigre plus fuck you teen attitudes and all the awesome that is NYC all add up to a great young adult genre piece. If Angela merged with Rayanne and was allowed to curse on my so called life, then it'd sound something like this. Read it and miss all those firsts. Seven years after the fact, here's what I remember about this book: Nick was just a boy, who liked music. Norah was similarly a girl, who happened to like music. Cool, hipster, underground music that was so edgy you’ve probably never heard of them, as they only play super top secret concerts known only to super rad fans who could decipher their secret signs in bathroom graffiti. One day, Nick and Norah meet while both lamenting their lame friends’ lack of coolness/knowledge of super secret cool bands. They spend a night together, holding hands and talking about how difficult it is being a super awesome teenager when no one understands how totally fantastic you and the bands you like are. Eventually, they may find their favorite ultra hip band, Jack Rabbit Knife, or Turtle Spleen, or whatever, and they may or may not live happily ever after, listening to a playlist that may or may not have actually been infinite. I wasn’t cool enough to find out. Also, they made a movie!

HTML:The New York Times bestselling he-said/she-said rock n’ roll romance that inspired the hit movie! "I know this is going to sound strange, but would you mind being my girlfriend for the next five minutes?" Nick frequents New York's indie rock scene nursing a broken heart. Norah is questioning all of her assumptions about the world. They have nothing in common except for their taste in music, until a chance encounter leads to an all-night quest to find a legendary band's secret show and ends up becoming a first date that could change both their lives. Co-written by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, co-author of Will Grayson, Will Grayson with John Green (The Fault In Our Stars), Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist is a sexy, funny roller coaster of a story that reminds you how you can never be sure where the night will take you…. I must be getting old because reading this book made me think, Do 18 year olds really talk like this? The dialogue was kind of like Dawson's Creek: a little too clever and contrived.
I thought I was going to like this, but I mostly didn't. The characters weren't likable, but angsty in a boring way. They wax poetic and they get all dramatic and I'm thinking, There are many reasons I never want to be a teenager again. Gross.
As with so many other hot YA books, I see the teen appeal in a detached librarian way, but I was personally disappointed. I only really read N&NIP because Michael Cera is playing Nick in the movie. I don't know how he's going to pull it off because his other roles have been on a totally different wavelength. ( )
