This mountain, the second highest, is infamous as one of the more difficult to climb. For example, in 2008 290 people reached the summit of Everest with one death. On K2 the same year, 18 people reached the summit and 11 people died. The moniker most attached to this peak is "savage". Viesturs is a local climber and has been interviewed frequently on the local NPR station. He is a great motivational speaker. This book, however, fell somewhat flat for me as it was more of storytelling and did not have an edge that made me want to keep turning the pages. ( )Viesteurs reviews six different climbs or attempts on K2. Having already read most of his source material I still enjoyed this book as he colours events with his own experiences and provides some new and different insights. Ed Viesturs chronicles the climbing history of K2, the mountain he calls the Holy Grail of mountaineering. One of only sixteen men who have climbed all fourteen of the world's 8,000 meter mountains, Viesturs has a wealth of knowledge of not only K2 but mountaineering. His personal insight and experience adds color to a fascinating tale of adventure, danger and death. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Is there anything more enthralling than a true tale of high adventure well told? Stories about men and women braving impossible odds under daunting conditions in far flung locales, often risking life and limb, keep me glued to the page every time. I’m talking about books like Papillion, Alive, Into Thin Air and The Perfect Storm. Well, today, I’m happy to add another book to that list. K2: Life and Death on the World’s Most Dangerous Mountain by Ed Viesturs with David Roberts. (ricavata da Amazon Tue, 05 Jan 2010 12:18:54 -0500)
