Meeow and the Little Chairs is a delightful book for the Toddler and younger Preschool set (1 to 3 years of age). It's all about Meeow, a friendly black cat with a jaunty red scarf. Meeow has friends --Baa, Moo, Quack, and Woof-- and once they are introduced we find them carrying their chairs and putting them in line. The question is 'what are they making'? Moo gets out his yellow whistle. Hmmm? Then Meeow gets out a bell from his yellow bag. They all sit on their chairs and then the mystery is resolved, especially delightfully for fans of trains. Talking Points This is a colorful book that small fry should like. There are cheerful animals and a mini-mystery to entertain them. The drawings are simple, and the font is large so that adults can trace their finger over the words to demonstrate for children that these letters tell what is going on. Adults will also find that there is ample opportunity to discuss colors, and the names of animals and what sounds they make. Extremely simple text, together with bright illustrations in the primary colors, make this an excellent selection for the easily-distracted toddler set, who will identify with Meeow and his friends, and their make-believe game. I did find myself wishing, after "petting" the velvet Meeow to be found on the cover, that the interior was more textural. But leaving aside this small disappointment, I think the entire series will have great appeal for the young children at whom it is aimed. ( )
