Bernard Edwards tells this fascinating story of the convoy that Montsarrat used in three parts, each describing one convoy. Part One. Convoy OG 71, with 22 merchantmen and eight escorts sailed from Liverpool for Gibraltar on 14 August 1941. No less than 10 ships were lost without a single U-boat being sunk and the convoy had to seek refuge in Lisbon. Part Two. Convoy HG 73 sailed from Gibraltar for Liverpool on 17 September 1941 with 25 merchant ships and 13 escorts. Of these 10 were sunk and only one U-boat was damaged. Part Three sees the tables turned during the December 1941 HG 76 convoy from Gibraltar. It comprised 31 merchantmen with a heavy escort of 15 warships, commanded by Captain Walker. During a 6 day running battle five U-boats were sunk for the loss of seven British ships. This book is a thrilling account of naval action played out in mid-Atlantic. It also includes an appendix of the personal recollections of one of the officers on HG 73. AUTHOR: Bernard Edwards is one of our most popular and prolific authors and is well established as a front rank historian. His many titles include The Quiet Heroes, Twilight of the U-Boat and Japan's Blitzkrieg. A former Merchant Navy Officer he lives in Gwent, South Wales. SELLING POINTS: The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monsarrat's remains one of the best known maritime and wartime novels - also a film. The true stories of three Atlantic convoys is at least as dramatic as the fictional account. Involves the ace U-Boat Captain Johnny Walker RN. Written by one of the most popular maritime authors. 8 pages of b/w illustrations… (altro)

Did it really happen or did it not
Or is it that I forgot?
Was there a dark ship swishing through the freezing night
With staring eyes to glimpse some tiny bobbing light
To guide us on and keep in line
And save us from a lurking mine?

Was there a heaving deck and needle spray
And thumping engine down below to keep us on our way
And spinning line and wheel which logged the miles each day?

Was there a shimmering sea with boiling sun alight
And darting flying fish that skimmed and glinted bright
And watch bells clanging in the night?

Yes, there was a crashing bow that cleaved the seas
Which always rose to proudly shake its head
And all those grinning mates who sailed and drank with me
Where do they lift their glasses now and which decks do they tread?
